Treasurer Tim Pallas today turned the first sod on the $250,000 redevelopment of the Lake Fyans project which will see even more visitors flock to the pristine Grampians region.

In April 2016 the Andrews Labor Government announced funding of $187,500 towards the project to boost local tourism, create new jobs and support the iconic Grampians.

The project will develop a 9.6 kilometre walking track around the perimeter of Lake Fyans, along with fencing, shade shelters, upgraded and new toilets, signage, nature trails and bird trails.

Importantly, the project will generate nine construction jobs, three ongoing jobs and secure five existing jobs.

Lake Fyans contributes over $7.7 million per annum to the regional economy, and with the upgrades the number of average visitor days spent at the lake is expected to increase from 75,000 to 100,000.

The new track will help preserve cultural heritage locations and native vegetation in the southeast part of the lake shore by limiting motor vehicle and motorbike access to the water in highly sensitive areas.

It will also better connect the recreational, cultural and natural heritage of the lake surroundings to Lake Fyans Holiday Park so that visitors can enjoy all the lake has to offer.

The three metre wide walking track will be constructed of local crushed rock and will include splinters off the main trail to encourage walkers to explore the diverse plant life, observe the rich fauna activity and to preserve the cultural heritage of the Djab Wurrung Nation.

The project complements the Grampians Peaks Trail project by promoting the greater region as a place to come and enjoy the nature and beauty of the Grampians by foot and bicycle.

Northern Grampians Shire and Grampians Wimmera Mallee Water are supporting Lake Fyans Recreational Area Committee of Management in the delivery of the project.
