The Caravan Industry Association of Australia’s ‘RVMAP’, accredits manufacturers who are committed to consistently making RV’s which adhere to all the relevant Australian Design Rules (ADRs), regulations and Australian standards.
Caravan Industry Association of Australia’s Technical liaison, James Field, outlines the relevant questions you need to ask when looking to purchase a recreational vehicle.
What am are buying a RV for? Is it to take the kids away for the weekend? Is it to travel around Australia? Do you need to be able to take it off road?
Know your product and its limitations! Where was it built and by whom? What material were used to construct it? Is it built for on road or off road use?
Does it suit your needs? If you’re buying a towable RV, such as a caravan or camper trailer and do you have a vehicle that you can safely and legally tow with? How many people do you need it to comfortably sleep?
How much do you plan to take with you? Ensure it has a suitable load carrying capacity. If you’re thinking of buying a motorised RV, such as a Motorhome, are you appropriately licensed to do so? Do you need a speciality vehicle or license to tow or drive your RV?
Does this caravan have the Manufacturer RVMAP Accreditation? Do they attend all the State Association-controlled caravanning and camping shows in your local area?
Visit the dealerships and have a look around! You wouldn’t buy a car without test driving it first, correct? Its no different with a recreational vehicle, take the RV for a test tow or test drive.
Do you know and understand the warranty and service procedures, where are the proffered service repairers located around the nation, what do you do if something goes wrong?
Know your budget! Do you need a loan? Can you purchase it upfront? Do they offer finance? Look around at different manufactures, see what payment options they offer. Shop around for the best deal, attend the State Association-controlled caravanning and camping shows, a lot of manufacturers have great show deals on offer or wait for the financial and end of year sales!
Its very important to always do your homework, there are plenty of reviews out there, from professionals too users of recreational vehicles. Have a read, they may inform and assist you in making the correct choice!
